What is webwords?

webwords was a live pilot that aimed to demonstrate the means by which new services can be created from existing commonly available web technology and standards. webwords successfully created an audio browsing capability for listening to extracts of spoken word CDs and cassettes listed on library catalogue records in a simple elegant way.

Despite the success of webwords as a technological experiment, the rise of newer direct download technologies has to some extent superceded the service that webwords provided, and as a result webwords will remain as a reference-only site after December 2006. The content will remain available until December 2008, after which it will be closed down.

Who was involved?

The project was funded by the The National Lottery’s New Opportunities Fund (now Big Lottery Fund). Design advice was sought from the Berkshire County Blind Society, the Royal National Institute for the Blind and from published research. We are very grateful to a number of publishers, for giving permission to use their copyrighted material from which to construct the samples.
